Seminars and Workshops at CCD

A national seminar funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi on "Marriage and Divorce in a Globalized Era: Shifting Concepts and Changing Practices in India" was held on April 10-11, 2015. There were 18 paper presentations with an inaugural address by Prof. A.M.Shah. 45 persons from India consisting of scholars, activists, advocates and students participated. Prof. Tulsi Patel, from the Sociology Department, University of Delhi, delivered the valedictory address. CCD plans to bring out a volume of selected papers.

A national seminar on "Legacy of Nehru: Analysis and Appraisal" was held on January 29-30-31, 2015. There were 24 paper presentations with an inaugural address by Lord Bhikhu Parekh. 55 persons for all over India consisting of scholars, students etc. participated. Dr. Subhash Kashyap, former Secretary of the Lok Sabha, delivered the valedictory address. CCD plans to bring out a volume of selected papers.

The Centre for Culture and Development organized an event to launch the book, Federalism in India: Towards a Fresh Balance of Power, edited by Lancy Lobo, Mrutuyanjaya Sahu and Jayesh Shah on 7th August 2014 at Vasvik Auditorium, Vadodara. Lord Bhikhu Parekh released the book and gave a talk on “Federalism in India”.


A seminar on "Changing Dynamics of Corporate Social Responsibilities: Moving from Charity to Responsibility (CSR)" was held on May 20, 2014. Dr. Girish Kumar Agrawal, Institute of Rural Management, Anand, gave the key note address. Ms. Dinawaz Munshi from TISS and many other representatives of industries and NGOs participated
 
One day national seminar funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research, Mumbai on "Religion, Secularism and the Shifting Goalposts of Democracy in India" was held on March 8, 2014. There were 12 paper presentations with a key note address by Prof. Rudolf Heredia, Independent Researcher, Mumbai and 55 participants from Western India consisting of scholars, activists, students (Theology and Multiculturalism). Different religious heads invoked blessings in the inaugural session.

Three days international seminar funded by Indian Council of Social science Research, Delhi on "Tracking the Growth of India's Middle Class" was held on November 27-28-29, 2013. There were 28 paper presentations with a key note address by Dr. Ashok Lahiri, Director, Asia Development Bank, New Delhi. Prof. M. N. Panini, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, JNU, New Delhi, delivered the Valedictory address. It is planned to bring out a volume of selected papers.

A two day national seminar funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research, Delhi on "Democracy in India: Strengths and Weaknesses" was held during March 15-16, 2013. There were 26 paper presentations with a key note address by one of India's finest lawyers of our generation Mr. Fali Nariman. Prof. Peter Ronald de Souza, Director of Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla delivered the valedictory address highlighting eight contradictions of Indian Democracy. It is planned to bring out a volume of selected papers. 

A National seminar on "Indian Federalism: Intergovernmental Relations Revisited: Towards a Fresh Balance of Power" was held on August 24-25, 2012. There were 25 paper presentations by eminent scholars. Dr. Subhash Kashyap gave the key note address. The selected papers will be revised and brought out in an edited volume in the near future. Apart from giving the concluding address of the seminar, the Governor of Gujarat Dr. Kamala Benival also released an edited volume, Economy and Society in Globalizing Gujarat by Lancy Lobo and Jayesh Shah. Dr. Biswaroop Das gave an introduction to the above book.

A workshop on, "Land Acquisition, Displacement and Resettlement in Gujarat" was held on February 25, 2012 for different NGOs at the request of Lok Vikas, Vedchhi. The participants requested that this workshop be replicated in different regions of Gujarat.

One day seminar on, "Changes in  Globalising Gujarat" was held on December 9, 2011. There were 15 paper presentations by eminent scholars. Professor Y.K.Alagh gave the key note address. The selected papers will be brought out in an edited volume in the near future.

Panel Discussion on, "Poverty Measurement: An Evaluation" was held on November 18, 2011. The speakers were: Professor A.S.Rao, Rakesh Srivastav, Mukul Kumar, Lajvanti Chatani, Jayesh Shah, A.M.Shah and Mr. Rohit Prajapati and R.K. Sugoor. Professor Samir Joshi chaired the session.

Panel Discussion on, "Communal Violence Bill" was held on October 7, 2011. The speakers represented both BJP and Congress including eminent lawyers: K.I.Nathani, Avdhoot Sumant, P.P.Kanani, J.S. Bandukwala. The session was chaired by Professor A.M.Shah.

CCD completed ten years of its existence. A colourful Decennial Report of CCD was released on June 13, 2011 by the for Bishops of Gujarat in the presence of large number of religious heads and clergy. It was widely distributed later.

Half a day workshop on "Local Elections of Gujarat - An Analysis" was held on April 3, 2011 wherein the 2010 election results of taluka, district, municipal and corporation were presented by Dr. Jayesh Shah and Lancy Lobo for Vadodara. Ms. Raheel Dhatiwala presented her analysis for Ahmedabad. Dr. Priyavadan Patel spoke on implications of BJP's electoral dominance in Gujarat and Professor Nagindas Sanghvi spoke on compulsory voting debate.

Seminar on "Tribals in Transition" was held on February 16-17, 2011. It was inaugurated by the Bishop of Baroda, Godfrey de Rosario, SJ. The participants made brief presentations on social, cultural, economic, religious and political changes among tribals, which were followed by a discussion. CCD presented its macro research findings on Land Acquisition, Displacement and Resettlement; Forest Degradation and Tribal Livelihood; and Migration and Elections among the Tribals. The workshop identified issues emerging from these inputs and took up a few for action plan.

Panel Discussion on "Caste and Census" was held on September 3, 2010. The panelists were: Professors P.J.Patel, A.M.Shah and Dr. Arjun Patel.

Book launch function was held on July 17, 2010 for the following book: (1) The Structure on Indian Society: Then and Now, by A.M.Shah and (2) Malaria in the Social Context: A Study in Western India, by Lancy Lobo, both published by Routledge, Delhi.
           Professor P.J.Patel, ex-Vice Chancellor of Sardar Patel University, presided over the function and discussed Prof. A.M.Shah's book, The Structure of Indian Society: Then and Now. Professor Biswaroop Das discussed Lancy Lobo's book, Malaria in the Social Context: A Study in Western India. Ms. Omita Goyal of Routledge, Delhi spoke briefly on both the books.
